THE STORY OF WHY I RECKON MY OLD MAN WAS NOT MUCH OF A HUGGER

I hugged the Dalai Lama longer than I ever hugged my dad. It was a journo assignment, shadowing the foremost leader of Tibetan Buddhism during a three-day tour of Brisbane. That man knows something about love:

Love is a necessity not a luxury.

Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.

We can reject everything else: religion, ideology, all received wisdom. But we cannot escape the necessity of love and compassion.

At the end of the three days I was granted a one-hour interview with the living Bodhisattva, during which I asked him two small favours: to bless the Queensland State of Origin football team and share with me the meaning of life. ‘Why am I here?’ I asked.

And you better believe the guy has a presence. That man glows the way fire glows in caves found sixty feet down in the dirt.

‘Come closer,’ he said.

I leaned forward.

‘Closer,’ he whispered.

The intention of the question was to access some of the many things he knows about the purpose of existence for all 7.9 billion of us. But he did something beautiful with his answer. He pointed to a woman in the corner of the room. Then he pointed at me. ‘You,’ he said, pointing at my heart. ‘You are here to tell her story.’

Then he pointed at a man standing by the doorway who looked like Monkey from the TV show Monkey, which I loved so much as a kid. This man was the Dalai Lama’s chief personal security officer, and he wore only expensive black suits over black business shirts and I swear he had ninja eyes and ninja fists and a ninja mind.

‘You,’ the Dalai Lama said. ‘You are here to tell his story.’

Then he pointed to his own heart. ‘You,’ he said. ‘You are here to tell my story. That is why you are here and that is all you have to do.’

And he was so perfectly correct. That was exactly why I was there. And I believe it is exactly why I am here on this corner and here on earth. And that is so truly useful to know. He took the biggest question of them all and reduced it, focused it and shaped it so that it applied only to the banana-bending chancer sitting before him. I don’t know the purpose of it all, but I know my purpose inside it all because the Dalai flippin’ Lama spelled it out for me in neon lettering that glowed like fire glows in caves sixty feet down in the dirt. Just tell the stories. Just write the stories. And that is all you have to do.

And we both stood that day and embraced and it was the kind of embrace that I didn’t want to pull out of. Not to get all flighty here, but the closest thing I could compare that hug to was the
